Volunteering opportunity: Life Story Maps October 2021

MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) are looking for 6-10 volunteers to work with our archaeologists and a professional illustrator to research the personal stories of people buried in the 18th and 19th century burial grounds at St. James’s Gardens, Euston, London.

We will be running a series of research and creative workshops in October 2021. This project is part of the archaeological programme for the construction of High Speed 2 rail (HS2 Ltd).

What’s involved?

– 3 research workshops including visits to the London Metropolitan Archives and the Westminster City Archives led by a MOLA archaeologist.

– 2 creative workshops led by artist and illustrator Priya Sundram.

You will research the lives and personal stories of Londoners buried at St James’s Gardens during a period of huge growth, urbanisation and social change. The burial ground was in use between 1788 – 1853, during British imperial rule and, for the first 29 years it was in operation, the slave trade was still legal in the British Empire.

People buried at St James’s Gardens include individuals from all walks of life and from all over the world: people born into slavery, people living in poverty, nobility, children, artists, musicians, soldiers, sailors, inventors, and industrialists.

Our artist Priya will use these stories to populate a map of the parish of St James’s. The activities you engage in during these creative workshops will develop and inform Priya’s final artwork.

The final map will be a beautiful and accessible illustration which will be shared widely to celebrate your valuable contribution to the project.

About you
No previous skills or experiences are needed to take part and there is no minimum time commitment. Although some workshops will take place in person, subject to COVID-19 restrictions, others will be delivered remotely via Zoom.
