Sunny Day for Voting!
After a 6am start (for me and the set up crew) the day got off to a great start. So far a pretty good turn out with people chatting and putting the world to rights in the sunshine. A great opportunity to tell everyone of our NEW activities here at Dragon Hall…
Tuesday 11th May sees the start of 2 classes of Pilates – one for the over 50s (see you there) from 10:30am to 11:30am, only £2 per session! The other is also on Tuesdays at 6:30pm to 7:30pm, this one costs £7.50. These classes are aimed at beginners and improvers.

Street Dance sessions are back after the June half term, Drama Club is going strong and the after school club is getting homework done and having fun!

The Under 5s Drop In is on a Thursday from 10am to 4pm during May. After the half term holidays we are going to be having sessions on Thursday from 12:30pm to 3:30pm and a NEW session in the Main Hall on Friday mornings from 9:30am to 1:30pm!

Easter 2010 Playscheme Report

A very successful and fruitful Easter Playscheme helped by our new Neighbours in Business ‘The Metro bank’. We were lucky enough to have 4 volunteers come in every Wednesday and support the young people in any shape or form.

Apart from our usual mix of indoor sports like table tennis, pool and play station comp we tried something totally new and different this time. We introduced singing and acting to the playscheme loosely based on Oliver the musical. One of our parents gave up her time to come in and teach the Young people songs from Oliver (thank you Gillian) and our lovely Drama people from Pascal Theatre l taught them how to act. This was indeed an eye-opener for all staff and we were surprised and delighted by the talent we had at our scheme.

We were not just confined to singing and acting, oh no! We also had 2 lovely trips out. One to the Natural History Museum where we queued to see the fantastic Dinosaur exhibition, it was worth the wait. The other trip was to Mudchute Farm where we mingled freely with the sheep and fed the Llamas. The weather was once again on our side and fun was had by all.

The second week was once again a really busy one for our Young People as our acting and singing came together to produce a showcase of what we had learned so far, in front of a small audience made up of parents and office staff. The young people brought tears to our eyes as they were superb and now we can’t wait until they perform it in front of a much larger audience later on in May.

Yet again we had 2 Fantastic trips.

By popular demand we went back to the Wetlands Centre and again the day was fantastic fun. We even managed to get some pond dipping into our day which was very exciting, especially when we caught a small looking reptile!

Our second trip saw us showing off our skills at the bowling alley where the girls were victorious over the boys.
We had such a surprise on Friday as during the party we had a visit from Mr. Metro and staff who came bearing gifts of pens and lollies which fitted in nicely with our end of play scheme party.
I would once again like to thank all the parents for their great support and generous donations of food and drink for this Easter.

We are all looking forward to our May half term all be it for 4 days.

Non Contact Boxing at Dragon Hall

with former WBO champion Jason ‘the method man’ Matthews!

Every Friday from 8pm to 10pm at Dragon Hall.

What is non contact boxing?
The first impression people have with this sport is they will have to get in the ring and hit people. In reality, that is not true. Some people, when they take up the sport, are indeed training to be boxers. However, there are a growing number of new people who are taking up the sport for the health related benefits. So, we need to get one thing perfectly clear. We are not going to EVER have to hit another person when we start our boxing training. And you NEVER get hit by another person. People will often ask you when you tell them you are starting to take boxing training, “Doesn’t it hurt when you get hit?” or “How do you protect yourself from being hurt?” You would tell them that you have no idea because you will never get hit by another person. Remember, you are taking boxing training for the physical and mental benefits they provide.

Who is the Trainer? Jason ‘Method man’ Matthews turned pro in 1995 and won the former WBO intercontinental Champion, Former Commonwealth champion and WBO middleweight title on June 17, 1999 with a victory against Ryan Rhodes.
Jason is now working as a street warden for Camden Council.

When and where? The training will be taking place at Dragon hall in the main hall from 8pm – 10pm every Friday.
Other Information: During these sessions there will be youth workers on site at all times.

‘We had our first session on Friday 26th February. This was well attended with a mixture of young people drawn from across Camden. Jason put the group through its paces, giving the participants new skills knowledge and understanding. The group is excited about the next stage and cannot wait to attend next week.’

On February 25th from 2pm we had a special 5th Birthday Tea Dance! It was very well attended with dancing, a buffet and lots of tea – see the photos here…

Street Dance Workshops

From 29th January 2010 we will be starting Street Dance Workshops given by Sadlers Wells and supported by London Youth. The sessions will be on Fridays from 5:15pm to 6:15pm. The workshops are for ages 8 to 12 years. Places are limited so if you would like to join in please email or call to put your name down.

The Night of 1000 Voices

Since 1999, The Night of 1000 Voices has delighted capacity audiences at the Royal Albert Hall. On Spring Bank Holiday Sunday May 2, 2010, once again thrill to the sight and sound of the huge 1000 Voices Massed Choir from around the British Isles, Stephen Disley playing the magnificent organ of the Royal Albert Hall and The City of London Philharmonic who will, as always, accompany some very special stars from London and New York in a musical night to remember.

In 2010, The Night of 1000 Voices will be celebrating its 10th birthday and the 50th Anniversary of Leukaemia Research. Leukaemia Research is dedicated to saving lives through leading UK research into better treatments and cures for leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. The charity receives no government funding and relies entirely on people coming together to fundraise.

Featured in this year’s celebration of the best of musical theatre will be some of the most requested favourites including songs from Wicked, Evita, The Lion King, West Side Story, Jesus Christ Superstar, Titanic, Rent, Kiss Of The Spiderwoman, Brigadoon, Carousel, Porgy And Bess and We Will Rock You. These are just some of the great shows which will be given The Night of 1000 Voices treatment, together with a sprinkling of some which may be not quite so well known.

The West End’s distinguished maestro, David Firman, will once again supervise the massed musical forces and director Hugh Wooldridge says “This evening is a must for all who love musicals. Come along and hear the best performers in the world performing some of the greatest songs. Come and join in the fun; come and raise funds for a most splendid charity whilst raising the roof of the Royal Albert Hall.”
