Comments from students
“The benefits are enormous. It helps with suppleness, strength, posture and fitness. There are quite elderly people who are undertaking exercises that some younger ‘fit’ people would not undertake. It is quite enspiring and most importantly it demonstrates it is very possible to be fit and healthy in one’s senior years. The teacher is excellent, knowledgeable and gets the best out of people.”
“I am really pleased and impressed with this exercise, it really seems to suit my needs. I have to be careful but find the guidance of the excellent teacher very helpful and benificial. She is very sensitive and intuitive to my age and needs.”
“This class is excellent. Best pilates teacher I have had – it has increased my fliexibility and strength and my stomach is toned.”
” I have found ease of movement and improvement in my joints. It helps with depression.”
“She is an excellent teacher with patience, clear in instructions and avariety of movements which are extremely helpful. I have a better posture and easy movement.”
“If your spine is inflexibly stiff at 30, you are old; if it is completely flexible at 60, you are young”
Rosy Sanders teaches this class, she is a former professional dancer and survivor of 2 hip replacements. She has been teaching Pilates for 12 years in health clubs, Pilates Studios and arts organisations including currently The Royal Opera House, The Third Space and Studio 74.
There are many benefits of the Pilates method such as increased levels of strength, balance, flexibility, muscle tone, stamina, and well being, make Pilates an inviting senior exercise program.
Many older adults find that their balance, flexibility and endurance have diminished over time. These conditions are workable within most beginner Pilates contexts, and they will improve as Pilates is practiced regularly.
Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a special concern for seniors in Pilates, as it is with many fitness systems. Osteoporosis is a weakening of the structure of the bone, which makes those who have it more susceptible to broken bones and fractures. Anyone at risk of osteoporosis, a category which does include seniors over 65 (both men and women), should talk to their doctor before proceeding with Pilates practice.
Special Considerations for Seniors
Before beginning a Pilates class, the senior student would be well advised to check in with his or her health care professional. Many physical conditions can be accommodated in a Pilates setting, but it is important to know if any specific risk factors are present. It is essential to communicate health issues or physical limitations to the instructor before the class begins.
Whatever your fitness level come and try Pilates, you won’t regret it!
